KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!!!
CODE INSPECTORS CAN NOT INFILTRATE YOUR PROPERTY WITHOUT A WARRANT
Do not allow the code inspector to bully you. They are only allowed to view your property from the street. If you catch one breaking this rule firmly tell them to leave.
Code Enforcement is required to send you an Official Letter that details the violation, and provides the File Number for the ordinance or law that you are supposedly breaking. This is important because it prevents the Inspector, or the Zoning Office, from making up rules as they go. They must follow the rules and by-laws written by the elected County Board of Supervisors.
Always demand an official written letter if the code inspector is claiming you are in violation.
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT
Anything you say to the Code Inspector, or the Zoning Office, can and will be held against you. Stay Silent. Demand an Official Letter, and then have a lawyer advise you on how to respond. If you can’t afford a lawyer then please bring your letter to the next Sunday Night Meeting. We can’t give you “legal advice”, but we can share with you all of our experiences with the County, and what has worked for us.
Bringing together all of our knowledge, skills, and experiences is the greatest strength of Take Back the Bell.
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO PROTEST
The county can not stop you from protesting on private property. All you need is permission from the property owner. That’s you. You can protest 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the rest of your life. All you need is a sign.
ALTERNATE PERMITTED LAND USES
RECREATIONAL: As long as you are not spending the night on your property more than 14 days out of the month then you are not considered a resident.
NON-COMMERCIAL FARM: Put up a sign that says (Your Last Name) Family Farm, or Private Ranch.
ANIMAL SANCTUARY: This does require a permit from the state (obtained online), but is a permitted use of the CR-1 zoning.
PUBLIC PARK: 😁😎
TAKE IT TO FEDERAL COURT
If the county threatens to sue you, remember that you have a right to have that case tried outside of the county court system. We will not be ruled by a Banana Republic.
